We are an isotope geochemistry and geochronology laboratory located in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University. We are dedicated to furthering all fields of science through high quality isotopic analysis and research using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. Here at FIRST, we are also committed to the teaching and hands-on training of scientists at all levels of education. Scientists and students from other educational institutions are welcome to visit the lab and use our facilities.

Ethan Sontarp of Commack High School participated in the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Arizona. We are so proud of Ethan receiving a commendation from GSA and AGI for his research with Dr. Troy Rasbury using LA-ICP-MS to study teeth and bones from the Barstow Formation.

Alan Chen, a senior from Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, was selected as a 2017 Regeneron STS Scholar for his study Understanding the Mobility of Important Trace Elements During Basalt Weathering with Implications for the Mars 2020 Rover Mission. Alan has been working with Dr. Joel Hurowitz and Dr. Troy Rasbury using our LA-ICP-MS to analyze weathering rinds on basalts from the Columbia River Basalt Group. We are so very proud of Alan!
